Celebrating 20 years as a painter in the great abstract expressionist tradition, David Tycho unites both natural and man-made subjects with a distilled simplicity inspired by Japanese calligraphy. These new images exude a sublime vitality through thoughtful layering and economical use of carefully placed brush strokes.

David Tycho graduated from UBC in 1983, where he studied under Gordon Smith, and then moved to Asia for 4 years. While in Japan, he witnessed Zen monks painting with mop-sized brushes on expanses of white paper spread out on the floor, an experience that eventually led him to explore the possibilities of abstract expressionism. He is unabashedly a Modernist, and his work is clearly influenced by the likes of Willem deKooning and Franz Kline.

David has exhibited in Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Penticton, Whistler, Calgary, Edmonton, Seattle, Los Angeles, Geneva, Brussels, Singapore and Manila, and his work is collected worldwide.
