About the ArtistJ. Clayton Anderson was born and raised in West Vancouver, B.C. He began drawing and painting in his early teens, and after touring extensively in Europe in 1984, enrolled in art school. Clayton was trained as a graphic designer at the Alberta College of Art & Design (1984 – 1988) and worked in the advertising art department of Western Living and Vancouver Magazine briefly before leaving to pursue fine art painting full time. The quality of light found in Impressionism as well as the work of the Group of Seven, E.J. Hughes, W.P. Weston, Emily Carr and others exert great influence over Anderson’s images of western Canada. In a career that has spanned two decades, Anderson’s reputation continues to grow as examples of his signature landscapes find their way into private and public collections around the world. The artist resides with his wife and daughter on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Artist StatementThe motivation for the creative process is difficult to define. It’s likely a combination of many different elements, not the least of which is the art of others that have come before you. But at the root of it I think it’s down to an artist’s willingness to be open and responsive to his environment. Occasionally, if the conditions are just right, the observed natural world around me seems to pulse with a kind of spirit or soul that seems profoundly ancient and mysteriously wonderful. I think this spirit interconnects everything from the monumental to the humble and forms a kind of unified whole. My goal is to imbue my paintings with this sense of “presence”, to cut through the noise of modern society and give a dignified voice to these elements that are all too commonly overlooked. |
